Copyright and image use

Begin with the image source

Images on this site are presented for study and viewing. Publication or other reuse may require authorization from the appropriate rights holders and image providers.

Before reproduction

Identify the relevant holder

Rights in an artwork and rights in a photograph of that artwork can be separate. This website can offer general guidance, but it does not grant permission, license images, authenticate works, or provide appraisals.

Ask a general rights question
01

Identify the image

Give the artwork title and date, or describe the photograph of Zarina. Include a link or reference image so the intended reproduction is unmistakable.

02

Locate the source

Begin with the museum, gallery, publisher, photographer, or collection that supplied the image. That source is usually the best first contact for image use.

03

Confirm the use

Publication, exhibition, film, websites, and other reuse may require written authorization from both the relevant rights holder and the image provider.

04

Preserve the credit

Use the exact artwork caption, copyright line, photographer credit, and source acknowledgment supplied with the authorized image.

Reading a credit

Four distinct layers

A complete image credit may combine information about the artist, the object, the rights holder, and the person or institution that made or supplied the reproduction.

01

The artwork

Zarina is identified as the artist. The title, date, medium, dimensions, and edition describe the work and do not by themselves identify the owner of a particular object.

02

The physical object

A museum, foundation, gallery, or private collection may own the particular work shown. That ownership is distinct from copyright in the artwork.

03

The reproduction

A photograph or scan can carry separate rights and conditions. Where a museum, gallery, publisher, or photographer is known, its supplied credit should remain with the image.

04

Archival photographs

Historical photographs use reviewed captions and source records. When a photographer is not known, no photographer credit or copyright ownership is invented or implied.

Important

An email to this website is not permission to reproduce an image. Written authorization must come from the relevant rights holder or image provider, together with any required credit.
